With Albert Pujols heading to Anaheim, the Cardinals have at least an extra $200 million to play with this off-season. Personally, I would like to see them restructure/extend starting pitcher Adam Wainwright’s contract immediately. Why let him hit the open market? DALLAS – The Saint Louis Cardinals made their move to re-sign first baseman Albert Pujols Tuesday, offering the free agent slugger a 10-year contract worth nearly $220 million according to Joe Strauss of the Saint Louis Post Dispatch. GM John Mozeliak declined to comment on specific terms of the offer to Pujols, but did confirm that the team had made a new offer to Pujols.
According to a tweet from former Washington Nationals general manager Jim Bowden, the Cardinals are set to meet with Pujols’ agent Dan Lozano in Dallas and there is a possibility that a deal is reached today.
These developments from the Cardinals’ camp come less than 24 hours after reports surfaced that the Miami Marlins had offered the 3-time NL MVP a 10-year contract worth upwards of $200 million.
Adam Wainwright was the piece that made the Cardinals’ starting rotation as lethal as it was…He was so important, in fact, that Mozeliak’s announcement this morning dropped the Saint Louis Cardinals from the favorite to win the Central Division to a team that will be lucky to finish second.
Newly-acquired third baseman Pedro Feliz
The Saint Louis Cardinals acquired third baseman Pedro Feliz today from the Houston Astros in exchange for minor league pitcher Bob Carpenter. The 35-year-old played his first 8 seasons in San Francisco with the Giants before a 2-year stint with the Philadelphia Phillies. Feliz signed with the Houston Astros after he was released by the Phillies last off-season.
